When creating a playlist for a Yoga class there is more to consider than meets the eye. Genres, lyrics, tempo, volume, and song order all have an impact.
Simplicity is key. Slower, softer, and subtle music have power. Songs without lyrics, slow beats per minute, and calming vibrations are soothing. When creating the order of songs start slow with gradual builds. Declining the tempo toward the end of class down regulates the nervous system. Softer volume in the room has a calming effect, whereas increasing the volume can be motivational during more challenging sequences. Silence or peaceful tones in Savasana provides the nurture needed to relax.
Since music is secondary to the Yoga experience there is room for variety. Nevertheless, it is crucial not to underestimate the potential value or disruptiveness a playlist can bring. When in doubt, let the music go. Allowing the spaciousness for self inquiry without music has equal benefit to a perfectly flowing playlist.
